AI-generated answers have become nearly unavoidable in search engines. They can be helpful in some situations, especially when you want a quick explanation. However, when the goal is to find existing information on the web, AI summaries are not the best tool.
Traditional search results point directly to the original sources. You can read the information exactly as it was written, see the context, and judge the credibility of the site yourself. When an AI system generates an answer, it is essentially re-creating information that already exists somewhere else. During that process, mistakes, missing context, or simply wrong information can appear.
Another reason to prefer traditional search results is energy use. AI summaries require additional computation to generate text for each search query.
Some search engines allow you to search without AI summaries directly:
- Google, Brave Search and Qwant allow disabling the AI summary in the query.
- DuckDuckGo provides a special domain that disables AI features automatically.
For Bing, Ecosia, and Yahoo, there is currently no known way to force non-AI results directly from the search URL. In some cases you can switch to non-AI results after the search page loads, or disable certain AI features in the settings.
